Tree Planting Initiative Aims to Enhance Flood Resilience

A project aimed at restoring an area of Dartmoor's ancient woodland and reducing flood risks around the River Erme is currently underway, according to Dartmoor National Park Authority.

The initiative involves planting 8.5 hectares of native trees on Harford Moor, near Ivybridge, to help "reconnect existing woodlands."

The authority highlighted that the planting trial uses the Miyawaki method, a Japanese technique, which is believed to be one of the first of its kind in Europe to enhance flood resilience.

Phil Metcalfe, project manager for Dartmoor Headwaters at the Environment Agency, called the planting “a great opportunity” to improve the area.

He said, "We're excited to learn how tree planting density can boost growth rates to mitigate flood risks in upland areas, and how these insights could shape planting strategies across the moor."

Dartmoor National Park Authority noted that Harford Moor's diverse landscape and steeper valleys are ideal for tree regeneration.

Native tree saplings will be planted by volunteers from the local charity Moor Trees throughout February and March.

Moor Trees’ CEO, Helen Aldis, emphasized the importance of integrating more trees into the landscape.

She said, "This project not only boosts flood resilience but will also enhance biodiversity, contributing to the natural regeneration of nature in the years ahead."
