Putin's Economic Stability: The Dependence on War for Resilience

Since President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia’s economic growth has surpassed expectations, even in the face of harsh Western sanctions. This unexpected performance is largely driven by substantial military spending, efforts to circumvent sanctions, and the redirection of commodity exports to more supportive nations. Despite earlier dire forecasts, the Russian economy has rebounded, with a 3.6% GDP growth in 2023 and projected expansion of 3.2% in 2024, according to the International Monetary Fund. Real wages for Russian households increased by 7.8% last year, and sectors unaffected by Western sanctions, such as hospitality and domestic tourism, are thriving. Russia's ability to adapt to ongoing sanctions has improved over time, evidenced by a notable rise in European exports to former Soviet states. For instance, German exports to Kazakhstan more than doubled from 2021 to 2023, coinciding with a remarkable 40% increase in Kazakhstan’s exports to Russia during the same period.

Early-Warning Algorithm Showdown: Yale Tests Six, and Epic Falls Short

During the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, hospitals urgently sought ways to handle the surge of critically ill patients. Many adopted an AI algorithm from Epic Systems, an electronic health record company, to identify patients at risk of rapid deterioration and ensure they received essential care. However, health systems have often implemented such proprietary AI tools without fully understanding their effectiveness. In a rare comparative study, Yale's health system assessed the statistical performance of six early warning scores using clinical data from seven hospitals, publishing its findings in JAMA Network Open. The results indicated that some clinical AI models may not be as reliable as expected.

Diddy’s Party Snub: Actress Speaks Out on His ‘Littlest Hands’

Hollywood actress Jenny Mollen recently revealed that she turned down an invitation to one of Sean "Diddy" Combs’ famous parties. In a story about her early days in the entertainment industry, Mollen recounted a chance encounter in San Diego when she was just 19. Dressed in a "brick-colored red button-up cotton shirt, hideous jeans, and loafers," she didn’t feel particularly alluring. Despite her outfit, a large bouncer introduced her to Combs, who surprised her with his small stature and flashy fur coat. Mollen noted that when they shook hands, his hands felt “like the littlest” she had ever encountered, comparing them to those of a 12-year-old. He then invited her to a party in his room, but she ultimately decided to pass.
