The Dark Side of Resilience: How to Know When It’s Time to Rest

Resilience is often seen as a positive trait—and in many ways, it is. The American Psychological Association defines it as the ability to adapt well to difficult or challenging life experiences through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility. You might be called resilient if you bounce back quickly after a setback or manage your mental health effectively during tough times. But I recently came across the term “toxic resilience” in a social media post by Dr. Aditi Nerurkar, a stress expert at Harvard. She describes it as pushing through adversity and constantly rebounding—even when it's detrimental to your well-being—ultimately leading to chronic stress and exhaustion.

Israeli Offensive Pushes Gaza Health Care Into Crisis, WHO Issues Dire Warning

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that escalating Israeli ground operations and new evacuation orders are pushing Gaza's health system to the brink of collapse.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the Indonesian, Kamal Adwan, and al-Awda hospitals in the northern towns of Beit Lahia and Jabalia are located within an evacuation zone announced on Tuesday. Two additional hospitals are also within a 1km (0.6 miles) radius of this area.

Kamal Adwan hospital has been rendered non-functional due to nearby hostilities, while the Indonesian hospital is inaccessible because of Israeli forces surrounding it, Dr. Tedros explained.

Al-Awda hospital is still operational, but its director told the BBC on Wednesday that it is "completely under siege."

"Nobody can leave, and we cannot accept patients from outside the hospital," said Dr. Mohammed Salha. He also reported the presence of a quadcopter drone "firing around the hospital and in its outdoor areas," along with gunfire from tanks "around 400 or 500 meters away."

In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told the BBC that they are "operating in the area against terror targets," but are "unaware of any siege on the hospital itself."

Dr. Tedros emphasized that even if health facilities are not directly attacked or evacuated, ongoing military activity and the presence of forces block both patients and staff from accessing care, as well as preventing the WHO from supplying hospitals, which could lead to their collapse.

"We've witnessed this too often — it cannot happen again."

Jimmy Kimmel's Daughter, 83, Makes Him a Grandfather

Now we know what it takes for Jimmy Kimmel to miss a night of work: One of his kids has to become a parent.

Kimmel became a grandfather earlier this week when his eldest daughter gave birth to a baby girl. During his monologue on Tuesday, he humorously commented on his daughter’s age.

“We were supposed to have a show last night, but we didn’t because my daughter had a baby. People don’t realize — they know I have two young kids,” he said. “But I also have two older kids. My oldest daughter, who’s 83 years old, her name is Katie.”
