Resilience in Action: A Pathway Out of the Child Mental Health Crisis

Jane Graham, a school nurse for nearly 20 years, has seen her role shift from addressing physical health issues like asthma and injuries to focusing on mental health concerns. She has observed a significant rise in mental health struggles among schoolchildren, particularly at secondary school level, though some younger children, even as young as seven, are also affected. Issues like depression, anxiety, stress, panic attacks, self-harm, and eating disorders are on the rise, causing many students to miss school or struggle to attend classes. This surge in mental health problems is mirrored by reports from GPs, youth workers, and social workers. Official statistics reveal that one in five children and young people in England are now affected by a mental health disorder, putting immense pressure on the NHS. Experts point to factors like the pandemic, the cost of living, and social media as contributing pressures, but some question whether young people’s ability to cope—resilience—could be a key issue. Prof Andrea Danese, a leading child psychiatrist, argues that resilience is vital and that the increased awareness of mental health, while positive, may inadvertently lead to over-pathologizing normal distress. Graham shares this view, suggesting that teaching resilience and coping skills in schools could help young people manage challenges before they escalate into crises, ultimately reducing the burden on mental health services.

VA Eases Financial Burden by Waiving Co-Pays for Whole Health Care

Veterans Affairs officials have announced plans to waive co-pays for certain "well-being" healthcare appointments, aiming to encourage more veterans to explore services such as yoga, meditation, and wellness counseling. While this initiative could save veterans hundreds of dollars annually in medical fees, its primary focus is on enhancing the overall well-being of veterans, rather than offering financial relief, as stated in a department release.

In a statement, VA Under Secretary for Health Dr. Shereef Elnahal emphasized that this move is part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to engage more veterans in the VA's medical care system and ensure they receive the support they need. "Exempting co-pays for Whole Health services is a key step in improving access to preventative care for veterans," he said. "The VA provides the best and most affordable care in America for veterans, and this proposed ruling is another important step to ensure that cost will never prevent a veteran from getting the care they deserve."

Jimmy Kimmel Shares Sweet Gift to Celebrate Selena Gomez’s Engagement

Jimmy Kimmel surprised Selena Gomez with a thoughtful engagement gift on last night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. After a lengthy discussion about her role in Emilia Pérez and her experience at the Golden Globes, Kimmel revealed he had a present for Gomez and her fiancé, Benny Blanco.

“It’s not traditional, and it’s not exactly practical, but I think you and Benny will really enjoy it,” Kimmel said before placing a Daddy Saddle on his desk. “You can ride around on Benny in a very wholesome way. I don’t want you to think anything untoward is being suggested here,” he joked, adding, “That may have been a regift.”

Throughout the interview, Gomez’s recent engagement to Blanco was mentioned several times, including a conversation about the Golden Globes, where she received nominations for Emilia Pérez and Only Murders in the Building on Hulu.

Kimmel asked how she managed being nominated for two different projects with separate cast tables. “You kind of have to pick,” he said. To which Gomez responded, “No, I went to both. There’s photographic evidence… I loved being with my Only Murders cast and then celebrating Emilia.”
