The Hidden Burden of ‘Resilience’ for Healthcare Workers

In the medical field, the term “resilience” is frequently used. Psychologists define it as the ability to adapt to adversity and emerge even stronger. When applied to medicine, the idea is that the more resilient a healthcare worker is, the less likely they are to face one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare: burnout.

Everyone in the medical profession wants to believe they can handle everything—and most try their best.

Resilience training programs, offered by many institutions, are designed to equip healthcare workers with the tools to better cope with and grow from the daily challenges they face, aiming to protect them from burnout.

While the concept sounds straightforward in theory, the reality is far more complex.

What if Innate Resilience Isn’t Enough?
Some experts argue that healthcare workers are already a highly resilient group. Alex Yahanda, MD, a PGY4 neurosurgery resident at Washington University in St. Louis, explains that the medical field naturally selects for resilient individuals.

Experts Warn R.F.K. Jr. Would 'Significantly Undermine' Public Health

A new national coalition of health professionals and scientists, formed to oppose the Senate confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the next U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, released a public letter on Monday. The letter warns that his “unfounded, fringe beliefs” could severely undermine public health practices both in the U.S. and globally.

The coalition, named “Defend Public Health,” includes faculty members from top U.S. academic institutions such as Yale and Harvard’s public health schools. The group’s leaders stated that they have gathered 700 signatures for the public letter and generated 3,500 individual letters urging senators to reject Mr. Kennedy, who has been nominated by President-elect Donald J. Trump to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Mr. Kennedy is unqualified to lead the nation’s health department, with a budget of over $1.6 trillion and more than 80,000 employees,” the letter reads. “He lacks the relevant administrative, policy, or health experience necessary to oversee critical public health agencies.”

In recent weeks, Mr. Kennedy has met with senators on Capitol Hill as part of his nomination process. His confirmation is not guaranteed, with some Republicans, including Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, chairman of the Senate Health Committee, expressing concerns over Mr. Kennedy’s vaccine skepticism.

Is Kevin Costner developing a crush on Jennifer Lopez?

A few weeks ago, both Kevin Costner and Jennifer Lopez were among the many celebrities who spent some time in Aspen, Colorado.

While Aspen getaways for the wealthy and famous may be a cliche, they tend to live up to the hype as top vacation spots.

What’s interesting about this trip, though, is that reports claim Costner and Lopez got cozy during their time in Aspen.
