Resilience & Mindset Mastery
The No. 1 Lesson I Learned from 100+ Parents and Experts on Raising Resilient Kids

A child’s resilience is closely tied to the resilience of their caregiver, as decades of research have shown. However, the idea that caregivers should prioritize their own well-being can feel counterintuitive in a society where parents, especially mothers, are often told that their needs must come last. I can relate to this mindset. When my three children were young, I believed that being a good mom meant giving everything I had to them, with no sacrifice being too great. In my efforts to be everything for my kids, I often neglected my own needs—such as sleep, downtime, and time with friends—accepting stress as the unavoidable cost of good parenting.

But after interviewing hundreds of families and leading researchers for my book Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic – and What We Can Do About It, I learned an important lesson: when we sacrifice our own well-being, we risk losing what our children need most—a strong and resilient caregiver. Looking back, there are several things I wish I had known earlier about building my own resilience as a parent.

Firstly, your well-being directly affects your child’s well-being. When parents are overwhelmed, it’s hard to be the patient, present caregivers our children need. This is when “proximal separation”—a term used by psychologists—can occur. It refers to when a parent is physically present but emotionally unavailable due to stress, depression, or burnout. Children are incredibly perceptive, and they may interpret our distracted or irritable moments as signs that something is wrong with them. Studies show that when parents struggle emotionally, children are more likely to experience emotional challenges as well.

To bolster your resilience, start by checking in with yourself daily. Ask, “How am I feeling today, really?” Naming your emotions is the first step toward managing them. If you're struggling, reach out to a friend for support—remember, as psychiatrist Dr. Ned Hallowell suggests, "never worry alone." Schedule stress-reducing activities, even if it’s just 15 minutes of quiet downtime. Take note of what refills your cup—whether it's talking with a friend, reading, enjoying a cup of tea, or taking a bubble bath—and make time for it daily. If needed, seek professional help, whether through therapy or counseling, as it’s an investment in both your and your family’s health.

Lastly, resilience doesn’t happen in isolation. Just as children need a stable adult figure, adults need strong support systems as well. Early in my parenting journey, I thought I had to handle everything on my own, but parenting is meant to be a team effort. The myth of the “do-it-all parent” only leads to burnout and isolation. Leaning on friends, family, or a support group not only lightens your load but also strengthens your emotional health. Research shows that spending just one hour a week with supportive people can reduce stress and make parenting feel less overwhelming. To build your own support network, issue an invitation to a few parents you trust, suggesting a weekly meetup for connection and encouragement. Be consistent with these meetings, whether it’s a book club, a walking group, or a Zoom call during nap time. What matters most is offering each other regular support. And, most importantly, choose your people wisely—your support group should be a space where you feel seen and heard, as you do for your children.

King Lauds Health Workers and Calls for Unity After Recent Riots

In his annual Christmas speech, King Charles expressed heartfelt gratitude to the health workers who supported him during his cancer treatment. Offering a candid message, he thanked the doctors and nurses who helped him navigate the "uncertainties and anxieties of illness."

The King also acknowledged the efforts of those working to bridge divides between communities during the summer riots, which he described as a time of "anger and lawlessness." He emphasized that diversity in ethnicity and faith should be seen as a "strength, not weakness."

This year’s Christmas address was delivered from the Fitzrovia Chapel in London, marking the first time in over a decade that a location outside of a royal residence was chosen. The chapel, once part of the Middlesex Hospital, was a fitting venue to honor those in the healthcare profession.

"Everyone experiences some form of suffering, whether mental or physical," said the King, highlighting that "the measure of our civilisation" lies in how we support people during such times. His message, recorded earlier this month, extended deep gratitude to the "selfless" medical professionals and volunteers who continue to "care for others—often at great personal sacrifice."

He also acknowledged the support his family received, noting that the Princess of Wales had been diagnosed with cancer this year.

Diddy Looks 'Astonishingly Thinner' and 'Grayer' in Latest Court Appearance

Sean "Diddy" Combs made a court appearance on Wednesday for a hearing related to his federal sex trafficking case. Witnesses in the courtroom noted that the music mogul’s recent time behind bars has clearly taken a visible toll on him. Despite the strain, sources reported that Diddy tried to maintain a composed demeanor, greeting his children and offering holiday wishes to the reporters present.

However, his appearance seemed to highlight the tough conditions he has endured at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. According to Law & Crime Network reporter, Diddy appeared strikingly thinner compared to his last public appearance, with noticeably more gray hair. "He seemed astonishingly thinner, which is to be expected after time spent in federal detention," the reporter noted.
