How Mental Strength Could Contribute to Longer Lifespans, Study Finds
Source: Harvard Medicine
A recent study published in BMJ Mental Health suggests that high mental resilience may contribute to longer lifespans, particularly in women. Researchers from Sun Yat-sen University analyzed data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), tracking 10,569 participants aged 66 on average from 2006 to 2008 through May 2021. They found that those with higher mental resilience scores had a lower risk of death from all causes. The study noted a stronger link between resilience and longevity in women and found that those in the highest resilience quartile were 53% less likely to die in the next decade compared to those in the lowest quartile. However, the researchers caution that this is an observational study and does not establish a causal link. They highlight the importance of psychological resilience and positive emotions in potentially enhancing longevity. Caroline Abrahams from Age UK emphasizes that maintaining a sense of purpose and staying connected can improve well-being and may help prolong life.

Health Shrinkflation: Delays Increase While Care Decreases
Source: Vogue
Despite the U.S. spending more on healthcare than almost any other country, patients are receiving less care and facing longer waits to see their doctors. This "health shrinkflation" is affecting primary care and various specialties, with many patients turning to urgent care or telehealth services. A recent survey found that nearly 20% of patients waited over two months for appointments, especially in the Midwest. In response, NYC Health + Hospitals has reduced primary care appointment times to 20 minutes to accommodate more patients. The average wait time for appointments has increased from 12 to 22 days, and 43% of patients report longer waits since the pandemic. The healthcare system struggles with increased demand, a shortage of doctors due to burnout, and rising costs, leading to more patient frustration and reduced care.

Source: TVLine
September sees a quieter month for Netflix, with fewer original releases but a solid lineup of cable and network shows arriving on the platform. As new shows debut on traditional networks, Netflix's content slows down. However, there are still notable additions, including the second season of "Lopez vs. Lopez," set to premiere on September 18. With a third season on the horizon this fall, it's a great time to catch up on this popular NBC hit.
