In response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, artist Louise Pasterfield created a watercolor exhibition titled Portraits of Resilience to honor the country’s strength. Held at Truro Cathedral, the exhibit features what Pasterfield calls the "faces of Ukraine." Her project started with a portrait of Valentina, a Ukrainian whose backyard had been struck by artillery, captured by New York Times photographer Lynsey Addario. The watercolor version of this portrait gained significant attention on Instagram, leading to an influx of requests from Ukrainians who wanted their own portraits painted.

Gaza Confronts Public Health Crisis with First Confirmed Polio Case

Source: Washington Post

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are facing a severe public health crisis with the first confirmed case of polio in over 20 years, a dire outcome of the recent war that has devastated crucial water and sanitation infrastructure. The Gaza Health Ministry reported symptoms consistent with polio in several children, with a 10-month-old confirmed infected. The highly contagious disease, which can cause paralysis and death, may continue to spread without significant improvements to Gaza’s humanitarian situation, including a halt to the fighting. The United Nations is urgently calling for a cease-fire or at least a pause to coordinate mass vaccination campaigns for over 640,000 children.
