From Fear to Flourish: Cultivating a Growth Mindset in Math Students

Source: Sources of Insight

UMath education in the U.S. is failing many students, especially Black students. In 2022, only 26% of eighth graders were proficient in math, with just 9% of Black students reaching that level. As a Black male educator in northeast Denver, I’ve seen the impact of poor math instruction, which damages students' confidence and reinforces a harmful deficit mindset, particularly in the Black community.

When I asked my community about their math experiences, many shared stories of discouragement and frustration. These issues reflect systemic failures in schools, where Black students face low expectations and racial biases, especially in math. This leads to a cycle of underachievement, where students internalize negative beliefs about their abilities.

However, a growth mindset can make a difference. By encouraging students to see challenges as opportunities to learn, I’ve watched students transform their approach to math, gaining confidence and resilience. Although the system still needs reform, empowering students to believe in their potential is essential to changing their futures.

Trump’s Empty Promises: No Replacement Plan for Obamacare After Years of Threats

Source: Yahoo

Despite eight years of promises to repeal the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, former President Donald Trump still lacks a comprehensive replacement plan. Experts are skeptical about the feasibility of a replacement under a second Trump term, citing the difficulty of crafting a plan that satisfies all parties and Trump’s vague proposals. John A. Graves, a health policy professor at Vanderbilt University, criticized the situation as “bluster and can kicking.” During a recent debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump mentioned having “concepts” for a replacement that would be more cost-effective, but his plan remains unclear. Given the rising costs of U.S. healthcare, Trump's promise of a more affordable alternative might seem appealing, but it lacks substance.

Rachel Bloom on Her Role as Frasier’s Daughter: Honoring a TV Legend

Source: Variety

Rachel Bloom, a child of the nineties, fondly recalls watching recorded TV shows with her family on their VCR, with "Frasier" always a favorite due to its theatrical charm. Over the years, "Frasier" became a comforting escape for Bloom, especially the Lilith episodes, whenever she missed home. Having seen every episode at least three times, Bloom eagerly joined the revival series when given the chance. She plays Phoebe Glazer, the daughter of Bebe Glazer (Harriet Sansom Harris), one of TV’s greatest characters. Bloom, thrilled by the opportunity, admired Harris’s performance and enjoyed her role, which features a warm rapport with Frasier, despite the usual tension with Bebe.
