How Can Cayaba Care Help Advance Maternal Health Equity?
A recent report from the Commonwealth Fund once again underscores how far behind the U.S. is in addressing maternal health disparities on a global scale. Despite more than 20 years of discussion and research into these issues, long-standing disparities persist, even with the rise of numerous maternal health startups. Because of this, I find myself skeptical and cynical when hearing about new maternal health ventures, doubting that any of them will truly shift the narrative.
However, I recently came across a maternal health startup called Cayaba Care, whose mission is to provide comprehensive maternal health support. At first, reading about the organization didn’t ease my skepticism about the long-term impact of such startups. But my curiosity was piqued when I learned that Cayaba Care is led by a Black CEO, Dr. Adaeze Enekwechi, a health systems researcher with extensive experience in the field and a mother who has her own stories about childbirth care. I asked her what sets the organization apart from the many others offering similar services, and she explained, "Our strength lies in our partnerships with mothers, their doctors, and the broader healthcare system. This allows us to identify where the system fails and step in to fill those gaps."
While her response sounded like something many startups might say, I pressed further, eager to understand what truly makes their approach different. Enekwechi emphasized that it's the team approach and the relationships they cultivate with doctors and other healthcare providers that set them apart. "We’re not just app-based. For us, this is a ground game," she said.

Sally Struthers Accuses Betty White of Fat-Shaming and Norman Lear of Stealing All in the Family
Sally Struthers is speaking out about her alleged experiences with deceased former colleagues Betty White and All in the Family creator Norman Lear, including claiming that she was “totally fat-shamed” by White.
During an appearance on the “Let’s Talk About That! With Larry Saperstein and Jacob Bellotti” podcast this week, Struthers shared that she found White to be a more skilled actress than many realized, revealing that White's real-life personality wasn’t as sweet as her public image suggested.
