Some people wake up with vivid memories of their dreams, able to recount detailed stories from the night, while others struggle to remember even a single detail. Why does this happen? A recent study, conducted by researchers at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca and published in Communications Psychology, delves into the factors that influence "dream recall" — the ability to remember dreams upon waking. The study explores which individual traits and sleep patterns contribute to this phenomenon.
The reason for such variations in dream recall remains unclear. Some studies suggest that women, younger individuals, or those with a tendency to daydream tend to remember their dreams more often, but other studies have not confirmed these findings.
Other theories, such as those related to personality traits or cognitive abilities, have received even less support from data. During the COVID pandemic, however, there was a renewed interest in the topic, with a global surge in morning dream recall.
The new research, conducted in collaboration with the University of Camerino from 2020 to 2024, involved over 200 participants aged 18 to 70. These participants recorded their dreams daily for 15 days while their sleep and cognitive data were tracked using wearable devices and psychometric tests.
Each participant was given a voice recorder to report their sleep experiences immediately after waking up. They were asked to note whether they remembered dreaming, whether they felt they had dreamed but couldn’t recall anything, and to describe the content of the dream if they could remember it.

However, it’s not only older men who die earlier — these statistics are also influenced by premature deaths throughout a man’s life.
Derek Griffith, a professor of health equity and population health at the University of Pennsylvania, believes that men’s health deserves far more attention.
While he acknowledges that women's health has been overlooked for years, with most clinical studies historically focused on men, Griffith points out the limited understanding of men’s health beyond biology and genetics.
“We understand very little about how factors like the economy, stress, and other influences impact men’s health,” Griffith says. Given men’s shorter life expectancy, he argues, more research and investment are needed to understand and improve men’s health.
