Try This 10-Minute Exercise to Relieve Stress and Build Resilience

Researchers at Stanford University conducted a study on stress and resilience that uncovered some surprising results. Focusing on a group of stressed college students, they asked them to keep journals during their winter break. As detailed in The Upside of Stress by Stanford psychologist Kelly McGonigal, one specific journal prompt given to a subset of the students had a remarkable impact. What did the students write about, and how did a simple 10-minute exercise lead to greater personal resilience, enhanced creativity, improved grades, stronger relationships, and even better health during stressful times?
Here’s how the study was structured: all the students in the study were asked to write in journals over the winter break. However, the control group was given a more focused prompt: they were asked to write about their values.
Boosting Resilience in Just 10 Minutes?
But it wasn’t just a simple question of "What are your values?" The prompt went deeper, asking participants to reflect on how they saw their values in action—what they did, said, or witnessed that demonstrated their values in daily life. Research has shown that this "self-affirmation" exercise, which can be done in as little as 10 minutes, can have a profound effect. In a similar experiment with different groups, scientists found that the positive impacts of this exercise lasted for up to three years. These effects included increased resilience, improved problem-solving skills, stronger relationships, and more.

Fact-Checking Kennedy’s Health Claims During His Confirmation Hearing

During his confirmation hearing to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. addressed a range of health and medical issues, including the causes of chronic illnesses, Covid-19, and the impact of ultraprocessed foods.
Below is a fact-checked list of key health claims made by Kennedy, as reviewed by our reporters.
Chronic Disease
Kennedy’s opening statement highlighted the growing prevalence of chronic health conditions, emphasizing a crisis in children's health in the United States. While many experts agree with this concern, they differ on the underlying causes.
According to statistics, 40% of children suffer from a chronic health condition, with the number rising among adolescents, particularly when obesity is factored in.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that approximately one in 36 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, one in four has an allergy or eczema, and rates of Type 2 diabetes have been steadily increasing among those aged 19 and under.
